Christmas Bird Count

The Christmas Bird Count is an annual event held across North America to gather data and assess long-term trends for native bird populations. The Bulkley Valley Naturalists sponsor and organise the annual Smithers Christmas Bird Count each year. All birders are welcome, from beginner to expert. New birders are especially encouraged to sign up and can join a group of more experienced birders to learn the local winter birds and how to collect the data.

Each year the Smithers Christmas Bird Count  runs from dawn to dusk a few days after Christmas (usually Dec. 27th). A potluck supper follows the count to share sightings with other birders and compile the day’s count.  Count data are submitted to Bird Studies Canada.

Do you have a bird feeder?  Sign up for the Christmas Bird Count Feeder Watch on the same day, and join other feeder watchers across Canada.
